Optimising your WordPress website for search engines
Whilst the SEO process I use below is described for WordPress websites, I would use the same processes on any type of website that wasn’t scoring well in search.
Ideally, search engine friendliness should be considered as part of the process of designing & building a website, sadly this isn’t always the case & many websites I am asked to help with function ok, & look aesthetically fine, but the original designer, possibly for budget reasons has omitted to perform any SEO on the site. Meaning the website is failing in it’s main purpose of generating leads or sales.
This checklist of SEO factors I look at is by no means comprehensive.
- Technical issues stopping search engines from crawling your website
- XML site map generation
- Competitiveness of search terms
- Image optimisation
- Quality of inbound links
- Correct file naming & use of alt tags
- Page delivery speed
- Search engine friendly URL’s
- Outbound links
- Tools such as IndexNow for new or regularly updated websites
- h1, h2 tags & quality of text content
- Above the fold text
- Meta tags
- HTML structure
- Social media links

Local SEO
Local SEO is the process of optimising a website to increase traffic from local search. one of the number of processes to do this is optimising a businesses Google’s My Business Profile.
Local SEO can be a far more important factor for many business websites. if you have a local trade or restaurant website for example its highly likely that you are looking to get traffic to your website from within your geographic area & not throughout the UK.
The fundamentals of local SEO are that a user performs a search on their phone, & the search engine delivers results based on geolocation, ie the location of the phone.
Local SEO in many respects can be easier as there tends to be less websites competing for the same keywords, but other factors include having a valid Google & optimised my business account, or the typically ignored by most but very important Bing places for business (Microsoft).
I am experienced in all aspects of SEO & local search. SEO can be organic, & the results of performing SEO on a website are not instant, but given time I can help to optimise most websites.
